On June 12th, 2025, US District Judge Charles Breyer ruled that President Donald Trump unlawfully federalized thousands of members of California’s National Guard and ordered the president to return control of the troops to the state and Governor Gavin Newsom. The Federal Judge stated “His actions were illegal – both exceeding the scope of his statutory authority and violating the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith,” which was noted in his 36-page ruling. Breyer has paused his ruling until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13th, 2025. The Justice Department has filed a notice of appeal. Attorney General Anthony G.
